Whoever coined the phrase “getting there is half the fun” obviously never relocated to a new continent. The time spent living out of a suitcase and learning your way around a new city (while driving on the other side of the road) can certainly try anyone’s resolve. It may sometimes seem as if you haven’t enough time, money or energy to survive your ordeal - but that need not be true if you begin your journey well-prepared.
The Paper Chase
Paperwork. That necessary evil. The process of attaining a South African work permit is no exception. However, looking at it optimistically -at least most of it will be finished before you get there.
In July of 1996 the laws regarding work permits changed, making it necessary to apply for a work permit before entering South Africa. Coming into the country on a visit visa and then trying to have it changed is extremely difficult.
The correct process of obtaining a work permit begins by requesting the necessary applications from the Department of Home Affairs in South Africa. Your company’s HR manager in South Africa should also be able to fax you the paperwork as he will have to fill-in part of the forms as well.
The completed forms are then taken to the South African Embassy nearest you for processing. The entire procedure takes approximately six weeks and in its final stage the embassy will issue a work permit/temporary residence visa in your passport, which is valid for one year.
In most cases, a wife can accompany her husband into South Africa under his visa and then apply at a later date for her own work permit.
Money Matters
In order to avoid double taxation and any similar tax horrors, you might consider contacting an international financial consulting firm. These firms can help decrease your tax liabilities and ensure that you are getting the most benefit from your contract.
Many times, if your company is open to suggestion, there are ways your contract can be structured (for tax purposes) more to your advantage by working with a financial consultant. Unless you are already employed by this type of company or have taken up foreign finance law as a hobby, you might very well benefit from this kind of advice.
The Dwelling Place
Some companies hire corporate relocation services for their employees moving abroad. These companies consider the employee’s budget and needs before offering options regarding areas, houses, schools, etc.. The relocation company can handle all the necessary work to prepare a completely functional home by the time the employee is ready to occupy it.
If you opt to search for a house on your own, you may discover that you learn your way around more quickly and have more alternatives, but there are a few things to keep in mind.
Finding a safe neighborhood is important in South Africa. You’ll learn that the locals/co-workers are very helpful in suggesting parts of town in which to begin your search. Houses and apartments, for sale or rent, are abundant, as are property agents and specialty publications devoted to helping you find the abode that suits you.
Many of the homes in these publications are listed ‘for sale’, however, it never hurts to call about a property that interests you and ask if the owner would be willing to rent it out over a one or two year contractual period. If the house has been on the market for some time, with no potential buyers in sight, the owner may accept your offer.
It is also beneficial to contact your home country’s local Chamber of Commerce or social club. They can often put you in touch with people who canassist you in finding a house, a school, getting financial advice or even getting your phone and electricity turned on (which can often be tiresome).
In many cases, landlords and utilities companies require that your employer co-sign for your lease of their goods or services. If you are setting up home for yourself, it would be safe to ensure that your company will not have a problem undersigning for you.
Furry Family Members
In order to bring a pet into South Africa from North America, you must first apply for an import permit from the RSA Department of Agriculture. The animal must also have valid health and clearance certificates from the State Veterinarian in North America. If the papers are in order, there is no quarantine time needed in South Africa.
As usual, when dealing with any country’s government, things may take longer or be made more difficult for no apparent reason other than to make your life miserable. Don’t despair. South Africa’s outstanding leisure activities and scenery will definitely compensate for any inconvenience you may have encountered while trying to get there.
